FlashmanI had to comment on the passing of one of my favorite historical novelists, author of the twelve books known collectively as the Flashman Papers, and also several wonderful screenplays, most notably the Richard Lester movies The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers.

Ed LaDou

Above: Ed LaDou shows a pizza topped with lamb sausage, lemon grilled eggplant, roasted garlic, feta, mozzarella and kalamata olives

My brother Marcus, like me a long-time pizza fanatic, has fallen in love with the pizza at a wonderful little joint in Micanopy, Florida called Blue Highway. I certainly share his enthusiasm for the place, but I told him the next time he came to visit me I was going to take him to the shrine of California pizza, the Caioti Pizza Café in Studio City.

Imagine my shock upon returning to L. A., to learn that on the very day we had most recently gone to Blue Highway, the high priest of the California pizza cult, the man you have to thank if you’ve ever had barbecue chicken on a pizza, had passed away of cancer at the age of fifty-two.

Nancy LamottFor all my passion for showtunes and classic jazz, I’ve never been a huge fan of the so-called “cabaret” style of crooning … what others laud as cool I frequently find sleep-inducing. So I had never heard of Nancy Lamott until I heard this on WMNR:

Norman Mailer

Of all the people I’ve ever met personally in my life, I don’t think I have ever been so much in awe of anyone as I was of Norman Mailer. I actually remember relatively little of the experience — I was in my early teens, a hanger-on at an adult party to which my parents had been invited, and I suspect no one besides them had any idea I had actually read several of his novels or knew as much about him as I did.

Luciano Pavarotti sings “Che gelida manina” from Act I of Puccini’s La Boheme, with soprano Mirella Freni.

Before the bombast and the insane managers and the overhype, there was, truly and honestly, one of the great tenors of the twentieth century.

Beverly Sills cover of Time Magazine, November 22, 1971

My dad never believed it.

It didn’t matter how many times we argued the point, how many books and magazine articles I showed him about her. He could never accept that an opera singer as good as Beverly Sills had never been trained in Europe.
