Régine Crespin in one of her signature roles, the entrance aria of the title character in Jacques Offenbach’s La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein.

With a few obvious exceptions such as Carmen, classic French opera has declined in relative popularity over the last fifty years, not least because of the lack of singers, especially sopranos, able to handle its demands. In that period, you could count on the fingers of one hand the women who could match Beverly Sills or Crespin in this repertoire. That we should lose them within three days of each other is a sad and almost freakish coincidence.
