I had to comment on the passing of one of my favorite historical novelists, author of the twelve books known collectively as the Flashman Papers, and also several wonderful screenplays, most notably the Richard Lester movies The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers.

Of all the people I’ve ever met personally in my life, I don’t think I have ever been so much in awe of anyone as I was of Norman Mailer. I actually remember relatively little of the experience — I was in my early teens, a hanger-on at an adult party to which my parents had been invited, and I suspect no one besides them had any idea I had actually read several of his novels or knew as much about him as I did.

Plus: The actors playing the students are getting better. Especially Daniel Radcliffe.
Minus: The older she gets, the more I get really irritated by Emma Watson’s laugh.

Books I like: The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik May 22, 2007

As I reported in a previous non-post, I spent a couple of hours on the evening of May 8 inside the It’s A Grind coffeehouse on Vermont, reading a book while the Griffith Park fire raged about a mile from my apartment.
The work that was sufficiently engrossing to distract me from that rather spectacular event was Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik, one of a series that has become my favorite read over the last month.

The closest thing to anything approaching good news on Monday was the word that Jonathan Gold has become the first restaurant critic to win the Pulitzer Prize.

Whenever I compare notes with anyone on the question “What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?”, I always have the topper.
You see, I used to be a cookbook librarian.
