Back in the summer of 2006, my friend Bob was so scornful of bloggers, that to avoid his snark I told him the only reason I was setting up a … well, a non-blog … was to promote my writing projects.
By my calculation, this is my six hundredth non-post on my non-blog, representing at least one post per day pretty much without fail since I started.

Passwords are case-sensitive; type them in all lowercase.

Six months of not blogging December 23, 2006

“Please don’t tell me you’re thinking of starting a blog,” said my friend Bob. “They’re such a cliché!” Well, I assured him it would not be a blog. (And it isn’t. No, really, it isn’t my blog.)
And six months to the day from my first non-post, the non-blog is averaging eighty hits a day*, and I’m not Time magazine’s Man Of The Year.
Screw you, Bob. You aren’t reading this, anyway.
*On December 6, thanks to Joe Bratcher and my friends at Twin Bridges, I got 192 hits — my biggest day ever!

I’ve taken the step of buying some server space to host the increasing amount of stuff needed to keep my blog non-blog running.
The first items to go up on the server will be the archived videos. For the next coule of weeks you may get error messages when trying to view a few of the videos embedded in archived posts. Since this transition is going to eat into the time I have to spend on the blog non-blog, while it’s in transition I will probably repost some of my “greatest hits” in lieu of having a brand-new post every day. I’ll update this post when the transition is worked out.
Eventually I may put the entire blog on the server, if I haven’t been carted off to the loony-bin first …

Keeping vids with KeepVid July 7, 2006

As you will have undoubtedly noticed, so far my “favorite things” section is heavily reliant upon content from Youtube.com. YouTube has so much good stuff that I don’t even mind that eighty percent of it is home movies of college students drinking and passing out.
A lot of the most interesting postings on YouTube are copyrighted, and when YouTube gets complaints they take down the video in question, no ifs ands or buts. And unlike other video sites such as Google Video, YouTube is not configured to facilitate copying videos off their site.
That’s where KeepVid comes in. KeepVid will allow you to archive a copy of any video posted on YouTube or virtually any other video website.
KeepVid’s output is in Flash Video (FLV) format. Here is a freeware FLV player in Windows format, and a player in Mac OSX and a variety of other OS formats (I haven’t checked this one out yet).
