Sometime in the summer of 1960, my parents took me to my first Broadway musical, live in a theater: The Sound Of Music with Mary Martin. Six months later, I saw my second Broadway musical, also live, with the same star — but it wasn’t in a theater …

Peter Pan was based on the 1904 play by James M. Barrie, and the subsequent 1954 Broadway musical staged by Jerome Robbins, with Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard in the double role of Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. It had first been staged live for television just after the Broadway show closed, and again the following year; but in 1960 it was televised in color and videotaped for the first time.

Today and for the next four days, a rare tape of this very special production.

(NOTE: today’s section runs 27:54)
