Answering yesterday’s question, it’s a dance from the island of Martinique (you know, where the heat wave blew into town from last week …)

Artie Shaw sheet music for Begin The BeguineCole Porter wrote “Begin The Beguine” for the 1935 Broadway musical Jubilee, a show produced by Sam Harris and featuring a teenaged Montgomery Clift in a non-singing role.

Of the thirty-one movies listed on IMDb that feature the song, the Fred Astaire/Eleanor Powell sequence in Broadway Melody of 1940 may be the best, but it had become a hit two years earlier thanks to Artie Shaw:
