“… Be Happy” is not in this post. And if that’s all you know of Bobby McFerrin, I can’t blame you for being relieved.

Bobby McFerrin performs “Drive”:

McFerrin is at his best with pure improvisation. “Faces In The Crowd”:

His father was Robert McFerrin (1921-2006), the first black male soloist to sing with the Metropolitan Opera (he signed his Met contract before Marian Anderson, but she premiered before he did). Here, Bobby McFerrin performs Charles Gounod’s “Ave Maria” with a bit of audience participation.
