“Broadway Baby” July 5, 2007

Three slightly different (!) versions of the song “Broadway Baby” from Stephen Sondheim’s Follies.

Here’s Daisy Eagan, age thirteen, from 1992’s “Sondheim – A Celebration At Carnegie Hall”. The year before she was the youngest person ever to win a Tony, for The Secret Garden.

From 1982, Bernadette Peters:

When Elaine Stritch performed “Broadway Baby” at Sondheim’s seventy-fifth birthday party in 2005, she was five years older than the honoree. After four nominations she has never won a Tony Award, although her one-woman show Elaine Stritch At Liberty won for Best Special Theatrical Event.

Can you decide which version you prefer? I know I can.

roscoe,
a toast to elaine…
36 years since “here’s to the ladies who lunch”
and she’s still still kickin’ it!

“…
Choosing a hat.
Does anyone still wear a hat?
I’ll drink to that.”

Eleine Stritch’s performance is really really funny and I kind of hate Bernadette Peters.

While I certainly don’t hate Bernadette Peters, this clip is most certainly from her younger, cutesier days. And it’s not as if Elaine hasn’t got similar skeletons in her closet — have you listened to Goldilocks lately?

I think both Bernadette and Elaine are proof that women improve with age … at least on Broadway …
