Eleanor Steber, that is, singing “Depuis le jour” from Gustave Charpentier’s Louise.

The (possibly apocryphal) story is that she recorded this for HMV because she was too hung over to sing the Mozart arias she had been hired to perform.

She was never too hung over to perform Mozart, so the story is certainly aprocryphal. I heard her many,many times at the Met (I worked there) and she was always fantastic. Better than anyone who sings today.

There are some terrific singers, but she was a goddess.
